IPL 2024: MS Dhoni Leaves Captaincy and Passes the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad

IPL 2024 season hasn’t even started yet and the biggest upset came in for CSK fans as Dhoni put down his captain’s cap. Its IPL 17th edition this year and lots of things were being anticipated. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the place where the three-time champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK), surrounded with a unique energy with the Thala Dhoni noise all over the stadium.

All eyes were not just on the high-power match between CSK and (RCB), but also on a historic changing of the guard. The iconic legend MS Dhoni, whose name goes by every CSK winning title success, was set to pass the captain’s cap to the young generation, Ruturaj Gaikwad, starting of a new era in the CSK squad.

Thala Dhoni as the fans greet him is not just a player in CSK squad, he has been the heart and mind for the team and of the entire franchise for the past 17 years, leading them to IPL titles which seemed just like a dream.

Dhoni’s unmatched captaincy skills is widely regarded as the pillar of CSK’s dominance throughout all these years. The way he thinks under pressure and make strategies, and man-management skills turned the CSK squad into match winners.

IPL history of the CSK team is highly impressive; they have won five IPL titles that to when Dhoni was leading them as captain (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023). During the years of his captaincy, Dhoni led CSK in an impressive 212 matches, emerging remarkable victories in 128 games. He has been defeated in 82 matches, with just 2 ending with no results. Which gives a winning percentage of nearly 60%, a testament to his exceptional leadership.

Shaping a team with players who have skills but needed someone to boost their confidence and give opportunities when others are in doubt. Players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shardul Thakur were given the confidence to perform well by Dhoni and the CSK management, laying a solid foundation for the team’s future match winners. 

For CSK supporters, Thala Dhoni is revered as a cult figure, going by the Tamil name “Thala” (leader).  His ability to win games on his own and his finishing talent forged a unique bond with the Chennai audience.

Dhoni’s influence extends beyond numbers, despite the fact that his batting average of about 38 may not be the greatest.  He was crucial because of his ability to understand the game, take calculated chances, and win close games.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, this name is not new to cricket fans, in recent modern day cricket he has emerged as a rising star, particularly for the Chennai Super Kings. His brilliance and consistency have sealed his status as a potential great. However, an even more fascinating issue is beginning to emerge: Does Gaikwad have what it takes to lead CSK in the future?

 There’s no denying Gaikwad’s skill as a batter As a key player in CSK’s batting lineup, he has become indispensable, routinely scoring important runs at the top of the order.  His capacity to lead from the front with the bat and perform well under duress is an important trait in a prospective captain.

Gaikwad is young and has a good skill set in terms of batting but he has maturity beyond his years. He seems cool and composed on the field, which is an important characteristic for a captain who must make rapid judgments under pressure.

Gaikwad has greatly benefited from playing under MS Dhoni’s renowned captaincy. Dhoni’s leadership style, strategic thinking, and man-management abilities would have surely influenced the young player.
